Cuisses de grenouille
Nelly Kaplan
Frogs’ legs are the pride of Tellier, a small town surrounded on all sides by ponds. On their banks, Do, No and Jo, three not-immune-to-the-charms-of-debauchery amphibian Fates comment upon human intrigues. Among the humans are Theo and Claire, caught in the web of a violent sibling rivalry. As mayor, Theo, with power and money on his side, believes in the principle that might makes right. As for Claire, she has nothing going for her but her skills as a cook. A municipal ban on frog catching soon threatens Claire’s livelihood from her restaurant, where frogs’ legs are the house specialty. With the help of her true friends, she comes up with the idea of importing frozen frogs’ legs. The plates are soon overflowing once again, yet with a small difference: her customers are all under the sway of a mysterious aphrodisiac effect.
While Claire’s Joyful Legs is booked solid, her brother’s restaurant has nary a customer. Theo, crazed by anger, loses all self-control and is soon institutionalized. Peace and happiness seem to reign in Tellier. Yet a sect devoted to the cult of Grand Master Amphibos settles in the township. The joyful clientele of the frogs’-leg-fuelled inn of ill repute is soon terrorized, while the enigmatic guru grows in power day by day. When he manages to get himself elected mayor, Claire and her friends must flee to save their very lives. So they head off to Africa to search for the secret of the aphrodisiac frogs…
A droll and poetic tale, Frogs’ Legs paints a comical portrait of Eros and Thanatos’s eternal embrace, while pointing a finger at some of our era’s most sordidly erring ways.
