Anna Politkovskaia
-
Anna Politkovskaya was one of the only Russian journalists – if not the only one – to provide independent reporting on the situation in Chechnya. As such, she received several awards in Russia, as well as one from the International Pen Club, in 2002, but has also been arrested by the Russian authorities. Working for Novaya Gazeta, she visited the scene of the conflict dozens of time, meeting fighters from both sides, reporting on the civilian population.
She remains as one of the lone voices raised in her country against the horrors unfolding in Chechnya. She was awarded the French Elle’s Readers Prize for non-fiction in 2004. She was murdered in Moscow in 2006.
