Maurice Auguste Beniowski
  • A contemporary of Cook and La Perouse, Maurice Auguste Beniowski was born in Hungary in 1741. With mixed Austrian, Polish and Hungarian heritage, he lived a tumultuous existence, and became, after the publication of his Memoirs and Voyages in 1790, the prototype of the colorful adventurer, the equal of Baron von Münchhausen. Known throughout central Europe, he embodied Polish patriotism and the spirit of revolt in the works of many other poets and writers.
