Les Conversations
Anna Lisbeth Marek

On the day of her husband’s funeral, Magda, now an old woman, sees her whole life flash by, and tries, perhaps for the last time, to understand and analyze what could have happened. So begins an imaginary conversation with Prune, her childhood friend, with whom the thread of dialogue never really broke, despite Prune’s absence. Magda remembers the unconditional, platonic attachment between the two young girls, who lived in Paris. She dwells, too, on how the rise of fascism during their youth forced them to think, and to grow up separately before finally being reunited. She looks back at her father’s joyful nature, how happy both families were to be together and how, from the day Prune and her parents were arrested, her whole world collapsed. Her father would spend hours in his study; her mother was overwhelmed with sorrow, and she herself was confused and didn’t know how to deal with her own confusion. All those years later, on the day of the funeral, and thanks to this renewed conversation with Prune, Magda will finally understand the secret from those dark times that affected her entire life.

In the autumn of her life, Magda looks back at her youth and at her unconditional affection for Prune, a childhood friend who was deported during World War II. She also reconsiders her own incomprehension and the mystery that surrounded the reaction of her father, who had always been such a strong man, to the fact that Prune and her family were arrested.
