Mo (short for Mohammed) is a stock clerk at the shopping centre. He lives with his mother. His father is dead and his brothers and sisters have left home. Mo can’t read. Every month, he brings his wages home. He takes care of the housework. He’s a neat, tidy and secretive young man. His mother scorns him, but he doesn’t care. His brothers drop by and take the money he earns. He knows, but it doesn’t care. Sometimes he has a fling with a woman in the council flats where he lives. They’re all older than he is, and worn down. They like his gentleness.
Until the day that Mo meets Maria, a new employee at the bakery in the shopping centre. That’s the day the story begins. For Mo, it’s the day the world finally opens up. But unlike Mo, Maria is an independent young woman who stands up to her parents. She isn’t afraid to scream, to judge, to decide. Mutual incomprehension soon sets in. Until the fatal day.
